What Are Dental Implants?

TeamDental Implants

Dental implants don’t just look like the real thing, but they function like it, too. And, despite being around for a while, they have been growing in popularity. They offer replacement solutions for those who have lost one tooth - or those who have lost many.

If dental implants have caught your attention, then you may be wondering just what they are and how they work.

Dental implants involve the implantation of a titanium post which acts as an artificial root while it fuses with the jaw bone. In doing so, it becomes a sturdy anchor for the new tooth. Created by an abutment that is added to the implant - the new tooth is a dental crown that is attached to the top. It forms a very natural-looking tooth that functions just like a real one.

The entire process can take several months, the implant has to heal before moving on to the next phase. In addition, for those who have inadequate jaw bone, bone grafting may be necessary, too. This would be done before the implant - and would require additional healing time.

Ask anyone who has received dental implants and they are quick to say that the finished product is well worth the wait.

Types of Dental Implants

There are several different options for making use of these natural-looking alternatives. After all, dental implants can replace one missing tooth or they can replace many. For instance, one single implant is used to replace one missing tooth - regardless of its location in the mouth. For more, you may want to consider a bridge or dentures.

When you have a row of missing teeth, dental implant bridges work beautifully. The bridge is anchored in place using dental implants, rather than utilizing the natural teeth on either side. Generally, it only requires two implants for a successful bridge, although a longer one may require more.

For dentures, implant-supported dentures provide a much more stable and sturdy solution than traditional dentures. They are comfortable, functional, and stay in place. You have a choice of fixed or removable dentures (often referred to as snap-in dentures). And, for those who are only missing either top or bottom, you can get a full arch by using only four implants.

The Lifespan of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the gold standard when it comes to replacing missing teeth, whether one or many. Why? Because they are designed to last a lifetime. Other options such as bridges, partials, and dentures are not permanent and will need to be replaced regularly. For dentures, even as often as every 5-7 years. Not only is this inconvenient, but it is costly.

The implants are fused to your bone and will be there forever. However, the dental crown may need to be replaced due to wear and tear after about 10-15 years on average, though with exceptional oral hygiene and care, your artificial tooth can last upwards of 20 years.
