During your routine dental evaluations with your general dentist, you will always have a cancer screening, which involves examining the soft tissues of the mouth, lips, tongue, and neck for abnormal tissues and lesions. These may include lumps, sores that do not heal, or an area of the mouth that has changed in color or texture. If your dentist has a concern during this screening, they may refer you to Dr. Cabassa for an oral biopsy.

Oral biopsies can be used to diagnose oral cancers and other pathogenic conditions. A small tissue sample is collected from the affected area, then it is sent to a laboratory where a pathologist can examine the tissue and make a diagnosis. We will use local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Once we receive your diagnosis from the pathologist, we will help determine your next steps, whether it’s simply removing a benign ulcer or referring you to an oral surgeon or other specialist.
